Team USA landed in Paris and is set for their first match against Serbia on Sunday. The star-studded USA men’s basketball team is full of talent headlined by LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant. While the expectations are high, the level of talent overseas has significantly increased.

So, where does the USA Men’s basketball team of the 2024 Paris Olympics rank in comparison to historic teams of the past such as the Dream Team?

On this episode of the Bob Ryan & Jeff Goodman Podcast, Bob Ryan and Gary Tanguay look ahead to the Paris Olympics, give their takeaways from the US’s gamer against Germany, and discuss the comparisons this team is getting to the Dream Team of 1992. Plus, Bob has an idea for the basketball players who didn’t make the team.

“You take somebody like Greece, you got the Freak [Giannis Antetokounmpo] and maybe four guys that know how to play together. That can cause problems,” said Gary Tanguay on how the gap has narrowed in terms of the level of international basketball competition.

No longer is Team USA able to give a sub par effort and cruise past teams. There are NBA stars on virtually every countries team such as Serbia with Nikola Jokic, Canada with SGA, and even Australia with players like Patty Mills and Josh Giddey.

Team USA had a disappointing showcase game against South Sudan, the world’s youngest country, who managed to lose to the United States by just 1-point (101-100) thanks to the late game heroics of LeBron James.

The Los Angeles Lakers have seemingly made their mark on Team USA leading up to the Olympics, with LeBron James and Anthony Davis being consistently exceptional throughout the first few showcase games.

“Anthony Davis he’s been reliable. He’s gonna have to be out there in the big moments for sure,” said Bob Ryan on the latest episode of the Bob Ryan and Jeff Goodman Podcast.

The Portland Trail Blazers traded Damian Lillard to the Milwaukee Bucks in a blockbuster move that pairs two of the NBA’s elite scorers, including 2021 Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, to becoming instant favorites to win the Eastern Conference and the most significant threat to the Celtics’ hopes of returning to the NBA Finals.

Nearly three months removed from Lillard’s initial trade request in early July, the Trail Blazers reportedly ended talks with the Miami Heat, the seven-time All-Star’s preferred destination, before agreeing to a three-team deal that involved the Phoenix Suns and landed Jrue Holiday, the Bucks’ 2029 unprotected first-round pick, picks swaps in 2028, 2030, and Deandre Ayton from the Suns, along with rookie Toumani Camara.

Phoenix acquired Jusuf Nurkic, Nassir Little, and Keon Johnson from Portland, and Grayson Allen from Milwaukee, depth pieces to help complement All-Stars Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal, the Suns’ new Big 3, but how will the revamped Celtics fare against the league’s new most intriguing duo?

While the Dame & Giannis pairing ascends the Bucks to favorites to win the Eastern Conference per most sports betting sites, the Celtics aren’t far behind and have a roster that — barring any critical injuries — is still talented enough to beat any team in the East. Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens’ offseason additions, most notably Kristaps Prozingis, enhance the Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown-led offense — which loses a key distributor in Marcus Smart, but its remaining core in Derrick White, Al Horford, and Malcolm Brogdon, along with the three starters mentioned above keep Boston in contention to win the conference.

The Bucks and Celtics both lost their defensive anchor in the backcourt. However, this is a facet of the game where Boston could have the upper hand in 2023-24. Robert Williams III, who enters training camp fully healthy, should revert to the All-Defensive center he was in 2022 this season while free-agent signings O’Shae Brissett, Svi Mykhailiuk, and Lamar Stevens add depth behind coach Joe Mazzulla‘s All-NBA wings.

Youth tips in Boston’s favor, as Antetokounmpo’s surrounding cast isn’t getting any younger. Brook Lopez is 35, Lillard is 33, coming from injury-riddled seasons, including a season-ending surgery to repair damaged nerves in his abdomen in 2022, and Khris Middleton, who underwent knee surgery in June, is 32. The defense has to be where the Celtics hang their hat on.

It’s also a reason to pursue Jrue Holiday from the Trail Blazers, who are reportedly planning to move the three-time All-Defensive First Team guard (2018, 2021, 2023). Even if it takes bringing in a third team to get it done, Boston should see what they can pull off, as landing Holiday in a deal would undoubtedly push the Celtics back to becoming the favorites they were 24 hours ago.

We’re talking about The Greek Freak & Dame Time two All-Stars that finished top-5 in points per game last season, joining forces. They’re already projected to be the most devastating pick-and-roll tandem in the association. And, Antetokounmpo and Lillard are also bonafide closers.

If you’re the Celtics, a team plagued by poor late-game execution that lacked focus in pivotal moments throughout their deep playoff run last spring, this is the team you fear most, equipped with two offensive juggernauts that can finish off a game off an opposing team’s missteps. These are reasons why Vegas has the Bucks favored over the Celtics.

Fortunately for Boston, the front office also brought in two of the league’s most reputable assistant coaches, including Milwaukee’s former Charles Lee and Doc Rivers’ longtime assistant, 2008 Celtics champion Sam Cassell, to help Mazzulla in his sophomore season as head coach.

However, Giannis, the two-time MVP (2019, 2020) two years removed from winning his first championship, enters 2023-24 with the most talented teammate he’s ever run with. A seven-time All-Star in Lillard, revered as one of the league’s most feared competitors, especially when the stakes are at their highest, is on a quest to capture his first championship.

At the same time, Tatum and Brown are focused on building off their success in 2022, where the championship-less duo and the Celtics fell two wins shy of an NBA title.

The Boston Celtics just put the Milwaukee Bucks and the league on notice.

On Thursday, the Celtics rolled into Fiserv Forum and demolished the top-seeded Bucks 140-99. Yes the Bucks were playing the second night of a back to back but this was more than beating up on a tired team. The Celtics came in and delivered a clear message.

You don’t want none of this smoke come playoff time.

The win helped erase some of the lingering stink leftover from Tuesday’s dumbfounding loss to the Washington Wizards. A game that all but eliminated the Celtics from competing for the number 1 seed in the East, regardless of how they performed agains the Bucks on Thursday. Boston sits 2 games back of Milwaukee with five games to play.

“We responded well from the jump,” Jayson Tatum said. “That’s all that I wanted and we wanted as a team, regardless of if we won or not, just to respond and play better than we did last game.”

The Celtics shot lights out all game going 51-of-91 from the field (56%) and 22-of-43 (51.2%) from three. The game was tight until halfway through the second quarter when Boston seized control, going on a 29-9 run to end the quarter and build an 18 point lead.

Boston pumped the lead to 30 after 3, after which both teams pulled their starters. The lead ballooned to as much as 49 in the fourth quarter.

Jayson Tatum was virtually unguardable scoring 40 points on 12-of-18 shooting and 8-of-10 from three. Jaylen Brown finished with 30 points, (17 in the first quarter) 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. With the effort, Tatum & Brown became the first pair of teammates to have twelve 30-point games in a season since Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant (2002-03).

“I think we’ve been pretty consistent all year long, for the most part,” Brown said. “We probably should be closer to 60 wins at this point, but I think we’re a better team than we were last year. I think we won more games than we did last year. And overall, we haven’t dropped the ball. We might have lost some games, but we didn’t let a bad game turn into a bad two weeks or a bad month. We’ve been able to pretty much bounce back.”

Along with their ballistic offense, the Celtics game planned the Bucks perfectly on defense. They built “the wall,” as Reggie Miller noted throughout the broadcast, referring to the three or more bodies consistently clogging the paint against Giannis Antetokounmpo. He recorded 24 points before being subbed out with four minutes left in the third. After the game,

The win gave Boston the season series 2-games-to-1. The Celtics beat the Bucks 139-118 in Boston on Christmas Day and lost 131-125 in overtime on Feb. 14. The Celtics didn’t play Brown, Tatum, Marcus Smart or Al Horford in that overtime loss.

Antetokounmpo was asked if he’s worried how the Bucks will fare if they meet up with the Celtics in the postseason.

“We know what the deal is. It’s not hard to understand. If you’re not focused, if you don’t play hard, they’re gonna kick our ass,” Giannis Antetokounmpo said of playing the Celtics. “It’s as simple as that. They did it tonight. Won by 40. If you’re not locked in, if you don’t play hard, and if you don’t go out there and make it tough for them, they’re going to kick our ass. It’s as simple as that.

Outside of Giannis, the Bucks couldn’t buy a bucket. At the half, the team was 3-of-23 from three, and on the night they ended at just 37.6% from the field (an inflated rate due to garbage time scoring). Khris Middleton finished with 13 points, and Jrue Holiday, one day after posting a career high 51, had 6 points on 2-of-8 shooting.

The Celtics next faee the Jazz Friday night at the TD Garden.

Injury Reports

The star-studded event many basketball fans were hoping for will unfortunately be derailed by injury. Alongside Marcus Smart (ankle) and Jaylen Brown (face), Jayson Tatum (non-COVID illness) has been ruled out. Robert Williams III and Al Horford are also questionable, meaning there’s a chance the entire starting lineup misses tonight’s contest. Grant Williams and Malcolm Brogdon have been upgraded to available.

For Milwaukee, Giannis Antetokounmpo (knee) is listed as probable. Bobby Portis (knee) is out along with Jae Crowder, the team’s recent trade deadline acquisition. He is expected to join the team after the All-Star break. Pat Connaughton (foot) will be a game-time decision.

Celtics Projected Starters

PG: Derrick White

SG: Payton Pritchard

SF: Sam Hauser

PF: Al Horford

C: Mike Muscala

Bucks Projected Starters

PG: Jrue Holiday

SG: Pat Connaughton

SF: Grayson Allen

PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo

C: Brook Lopez

Boston Celtics Overview

Over the last month, the Celtics have been resilient in the face of injury. Tatum sitting out tonight is a huge blow, but the team is coming off a win against the Grizzlies where he shot just 3-16 from the field. While the Grizzlies are currently going through a rough stretch, that game saw eight Celtics finish in double figures against a really tough Memphis defense. Derrick White is leading the way on offense, winning Eastern Conference Player of the Week after posting 24.5 points, 7.5 assists, and 4.8 rebounds across four games. He has been massive since Marcus Smart went down, and the C’s need him to keep it up if they want to win tonight.

To make up for the Tatum loss, the Celtics need to space the floor even more than they typically do, which is why the Mike Muscala trade comes in handy tonight. The big man is shooting 40% from three with both Oklahoma City and Boston, and while on OKC, the Thunder’s net rating dropped from +3.0 to -8.1 when he was off the floor. Put simply, the guy can shoot, and giving him bigger minutes tonight will draw Brook Lopez out of the paint on defense and free up drives for other players.

Milwaukee Bucks Overview

It’s no coincidence that since Khris Middleton returned, the Bucks have rattled off 10 straight wins and counting. The SF has been working his way back from a knee injury, and although he’s coming off the bench for now, his presence on the floor has greatly elevated a Bucks offense that struggled for most of the season. Over the last 10 games, the Bucks offense is ranked 7th in the NBA. Both his return and the improved play of offseason addition Joe Ingles mean the Celtics can’t just zero in on Antetokounmpo at all times on the defensive end.

The Bucks are also a strong team against the three, which may create problems for Boston. On top of strong rim protection from Lopez and Antetokounmpo, the Bucks have held opposing teams to 34.6% from beyond the arc, tied for third-best in the NBA. The Bucks’ stars should power them past a depleted Celtics team tonight, but they can put away the game quicker if they force bad nights from Hauser, Muscala, and the rest of Boston’s shooters.

Prediction

Every Bucks and Celtics game going forward — both in the regular season and potentially in the Eastern Conference Finals — should be a back and forth brawl between the two best teams in the NBA. This will probably not be that type of game. The Celtics depth pieces have proved they can battle against anyone, but with at least three starters out for Boston, I’m taking Milwaukee.

Milwaukee Bucks 113, Boston Celtics 101
