How Do the New-Look Mavericks Stack Up Against the Celtics?

The Mavericks and Celtics had big offseasons, with Dallas securing 4-time NBA Champion and one of the best shooters the game has ever seen in Klay Thompson, while the Celtics kept the core of their team in tact.

Although the Celtics defeated in Dallas Mavericks in just five games in the NBA Finals, does adding a sharpshooter like Klay Thompson help them get over the hump and defeat a team like Boston?

“I think it’s definitely going to be a different dynamic. [Klay Thompson] probably won’t get the same usage as he did in Golden State. You got two guys who are extremely ball dominate and a lot of Dallas’ offense revolves in isolation,” said Mike Curtis of Dallas Morning News on the latest episode of The Big 3 NBA Podcast.

NBA free agency proved that teams need a balanced starting five with at least three stars that are of the caliber of the Celtics to compete. Paul George joined the Philadelphia 76ers trio of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Now, the Dallas Mavericks add Klay Thompson into the equation to add onto their already powerful one-two punch in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

“I think every team is going after the Celtics model. Have as many long wings as you can and just put them out there and let them figure it out,” said Mike Curtis.

On the latest episode of Celtics Beat, Adam Kaufman and Even Valenti were joined by Steve Bulpett of Heavy Sports. They discussed how Jayson Tatum has improved his ability to attack the basket and Bulpett says that element of his game is huge. He’s quicker and stronger when he attacks the basket and that has taken his game to another level. The guys also discussed how Tatum’s shooting numbers are down slightly since last year and that he likely isn’t an MVP candidate but that isn’t a bad thing. He has more pieces around him and the focus from the team, the media and the fans seems to be more about winning as opposed to individual accolades than it has been in previous years.

Celtics vs. Warriors 2.0 is Most Likely 2023 NBA Finals Matchup According to Oddsmakers

The Celtics are 3-1 to start their 2022 campaign, and already look ready to make it back to the NBA Finals. Jayson Tatum is playing A+ basketball early, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart continue to be the perfect role players in a fine-tuned system, and head coach Joe Mazzulla has been more than a viable replacement for Ime Udoka.

Another team that looks poised to get back to the Finals is the Golden State Warriors. Despite their 2-2 record, they have an All-Time great in Stephen Curry, a top-tier head coach in Steve Kerr, and just the right amount of drama surrounding Draymond Green to motivate the entire franchise moving forward.

Our partners at BetOnline.ag also seem to think that both of these teams again look ready to battle for NBA supremacy. According to the sportsbook, Celtics vs. Warriors is the most likely 2023 Finals matchup:

Like I said above, Jayson Tatum is playing A+ basketball already this season. On a per-game basis, he’s averaging 32.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists, and is turning the ball over less than two times per game. Before the season, I cited Four Reasons Why Tatum Will Win MVP – the reasons being: his age, his rebounds and assists continuing to go up, the Celtics improved supporting cast, and the fact that he’s the unquestioned best player on a top three NBA team.

All four of these ring true through the first four games. There’s certainly a long way to go, but I like the path the Celtics have put themselves on so far.

The Celtics Backs Are Officially Against the Wall – NBA Finals Game Six Betting Preview and Prediction

I’m going to open this the same way I opened my last game preview:

This series is going seven games.

The Warriors beat the Celtics in dominant fashion on Monday night 104-94 – taking a commanding 3-2 series lead in the Finals.

After their statement win on Monday, the Warriors remain the favorites to win the title according to BetOnline.ag, and it isn’t particularly close. Here are the odds:

Despite the Warriors being such heavy favorites to win it all, the Celtics are favored to win game six and force a game seven on Sunday night. Here are the odds for Thursday:

Storylines

It was Jaylen Brown’s turn to completely lay an egg on Monday night. In the loss, the 25-year-old shot just 5-18 and was 0-5 from the three-point line. He only scored 18 points and had an abundance of costly turnovers that stiffled Boston’s chances of winning the game.

Jayson Tatum had his best game of the series, scoring the ball efficiently and making plus-plays that allowed his teammates to score. He too, however, turned the ball over far too many times to justify a win.

Like we’ve constantly said – the name of the game continues to be turnovers. I alluded to this when breaking down game five:

In a game where Steph Curry scores 16 points, Draymond Green fouls out, and the Golden State Warriors shoot 22% from three, you would think you could muster up a victory – no?

Well, the Celtics did everything in their right mind to make sure that didn’t happen. According to Barstool Sports’ Dan Greenberg, Boston allowed 22 points off of turnovers, and missed 10 free throws.

The Celtics lost by 10.

They do this to themselves constantly and it is literally gut-wrenching.

As both a fan and a writer, it really is gut-wrenching. You watch this team go from absolutely dominant to completely incompetent in a matter of minutes. It makes you think what the heck is going on in their heads that makes these crazy swings happen.

Prediction

Given all of the negativity surrounding the Celtics lately, I think they’ll win on Thursday. They’re at home, the Garden will be rocking, and they know that this is their is their only chance to keep this series alive.
