Was Tatum hurt? Was he sick? Or did Steve Kerr just not want to play him? All of these rumors circulated the internet after each quarter went by that Jayson Tatum didn’t leave the bench.

On this episode of the Bob Ryan & Jeff Goodman NBA Podcast, Bob and Gary Tanguay discuss KD and Lebron’s Olympic swan song, Tatum getting a rest and Derek White being a coach’s dream. Bob also tells the story of the U.S. women’s basketball team in 1992 and 1996.

“I just look at this as Lebron and Durant’s swan song and maybe Steph too. Good for them. I hope they enjoy it, they deserve it. They’re gonna win the gold medal and if this is like a moment of international appreciation for those two or three guys that’s great,” said Gary Tanguay on the latest episode of the Bob Ryan and Jeff Goodman Podcast. 

Bob Ryan covered the men and women in the 1992 Olympics. While Team USA’s women’s basketball team was favored to win the gold medal, the Soviet Union gave them trouble.

“[The Soviet Union] was up against the favorite Americans and they put on a clinic, a clinic of dissection on offense. They just played a magnificent game and beat the USA team…and shocked the basketball world,” said Bob Ryan.

Ryan recalls being inspired by the level of competition and this game was one of his all-time Olympic highlights showcasing the tremendous level of women’s basketball around the world.

The win for Team USA seemed to be overshadowed by perhaps an even bigger storyline surrounding two players who did not make it into the game for the US at all: Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton.

Steve Kerr said he told Jayson Tatum before the game that the rotations may play out like this:

“That’ll change, every game is going to be different.”

“He’s an amazing guy, great player, and he handled it beautifully. He’ll be back out there next game.”

While some speculated that Jayson Tatum may have been hurt, he put those rumors to bed.

“They are playing a lot of three guard lineups out there and that squeezes Tatum out of the mix a little bit because you’ve got LeBron and KD at the 4. If he is just slotting in at the 4 on this team it’s gonna be hard to pass those guys,” said John Zannis on the latest episode of The Garden Report.

Steve Kerr set the record straight ahead of Team USA’s game against South Sudan in a pre-game press conference saying, “Jayson will play…we’re going to need him.”

So, where does the USA Men’s basketball team of the 2024 Paris Olympics rank in comparison to historic teams of the past such as the Dream Team?

On this episode of the Bob Ryan & Jeff Goodman Podcast, Bob Ryan and Gary Tanguay look ahead to the Paris Olympics, give their takeaways from the US’s gamer against Germany, and discuss the comparisons this team is getting to the Dream Team of 1992. Plus, Bob has an idea for the basketball players who didn’t make the team.

“You take somebody like Greece, you got the Freak [Giannis Antetokounmpo] and maybe four guys that know how to play together. That can cause problems,” said Gary Tanguay on how the gap has narrowed in terms of the level of international basketball competition.

No longer is Team USA able to give a sub par effort and cruise past teams. There are NBA stars on virtually every countries team such as Serbia with Nikola Jokic, Canada with SGA, and even Australia with players like Patty Mills and Josh Giddey.

Team USA had a disappointing showcase game against South Sudan, the world’s youngest country, who managed to lose to the United States by just 1-point (101-100) thanks to the late game heroics of LeBron James.

The Los Angeles Lakers have seemingly made their mark on Team USA leading up to the Olympics, with LeBron James and Anthony Davis being consistently exceptional throughout the first few showcase games.

“Anthony Davis he’s been reliable. He’s gonna have to be out there in the big moments for sure,” said Bob Ryan on the latest episode of the Bob Ryan and Jeff Goodman Podcast.
