Total: 153

Moneyline: Kansas -195/UNC +170

Storylines

Instead of getting Coach K’s last chance at a National Championship, we get the Roy Williams Bowl. The North Carolina Tar Heels and the Kansas Jayhawks are set to face off on Monday night for a chance at a championship.

Kansas took down Villanova on Saturday 81-65, and the game was never particularly close. Led by Ochai Agbaji and David McCormack, the Jayhawks shot out to an early 20-point first half lead and never looked back. They led wire-to-wire, and despite a, 8-0 run by Villanova early in the second half cutting the deficit to eight points – Kansas was in control the entire game on their way to the championship. Villanova guard Collin Gillespie led the way with 17 points in his last game for the Wildcats – but it wasn’t enough for the storied senior guard to prolong his career.

Saturday’s night cap was outstanding. Rivals Duke and North Carolina played an unbelievable back-and-forth game that included 18(!!) lead changes and dominant performances all over the court. UNC’s Armando Bacot had 21 rebounds, guard Caleb Love scored 28 points, and Brady Manek shot 50% from behind the arc to lead the Tar Heels to a victory. Paulo Banchero led the way, per usual, for Duke with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Trevor Keels put up an excellent 19-point performance, but it wasn’t enough for the Blue Devils. Coach K goes out with a loss to his all-time rival.

Prediction/Pick

People are forgetting that North Carolina is an eight-seed. They’ve certainly defied odds over the last month and showed that they belong, but I think that comes to an end on Monday night. The Kansas Jayhawks have marched their way through this tournament so far and I don’t see that stopping. It may be back and forth, but in the end Kansas will come out victorious.

Congratulations Jayhawks – you’re National Champions.

Prediction: Kansas 84 – UNC 74

Side: Kansas -4.5

Total: OVER 153

To be brutally honest, the Elite Eight was not the greatest showing of basketball. Outside of Houston vs. Villanova, each game was a relative blowout and there was not much excitement involved at all.

However, it brought us to this coming weekend, where we get four blue bloods matching up for a chance to win a National Championship.

Who Will Win Each Region of the NCAA Tournament?

March Madness – Betting Odds and Ends For the Round of 64

NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Betting Odds Heading into the Sweet Sixteen

Sweet Sixteen West Region – Gonzaga vs. Arkansas and Texas Tech vs. Duke – Betting Predictions and Picks

Sweet Sixteen South Region – Michigan vs. Villanova and Arizona vs. Houston – Betting Predictions and Picks

Sweet Sixteen Midwest Region – Providence vs. Kansas and Iowa State vs. Miami – Betting Predictions and Picks

Sweet Sixteen East Region – St. Peter’s vs. Purdue and North Carolina vs. UCLA – Betting Predictions and Picks

NCAA Men’s Basketball Elite Eight Houston vs. Villanova and Arkansas vs. Duke – Betting Predictions and Picks

The four blue bloods are, of course, Duke, Kansas, Villanova, and North Carolina. Here are their odds to win the tournament heading into Saturday’s Final Four. As always, all odds and NCAA March Madness betting content is powered by our friends at BetOnline.ag:

Odds to Win the Tournament

Duke                          +140

Kansas                      +190

North Carolina        +475

Villanova                  +500

There’s been a lot of talk about the coaches in this tournament. Saint Peter’s Shaheen Holloway made a name for himself with the Peacocks, Kansas’ Bill Self and Villanova’s Jay Wright are back in the Final Four, and – of course – it’s Coach K’s final season coaching the Duke Blue Devils.

However, it’s the players that make this whole thing happen. Here are BetOnline’s odds on who will win the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award:

Most Outstanding Player

Paulo Banchero                    +250

Ochai Agbaji                          +400

Collin Gillespie                     +900

Jermaine Samuels               +900

Armando Bacot                   +1000

Remy Martin                        +1000

AJ Griffin                              +2000

Brady Manek                       +2000

Caleb Love                            +2000

Christian Braun                   +2000

Jeremy Roach                     +2500

Mark Williams                     +2500

Fabian White Jr.                 +4000

Caleb Daniels                      +5000

R.J. Davis                             +5000

Wendell Moore Jr.             +5000

Duke’s Paulo Banchero (+250) is the best player still standing. If the Blue Devils win it all, he’s almost certain to win the award. However there are plenty of long shots on the board that can win MOP – so long as Duke doesn’t win.

Villanova’s Collin Gillespie (+900), Kansas’ Remy Martin (+1000), and UNC’s Brady Manek (+2000), are my favorite bets for the teams outside of Duke. These three players are all capable of having a monster weekend to lead their teams to a championship, and would be completely deserving of the Most Outstanding Player award.

Keep it here on CLNSMedia.com all week for betting previews and predictions for both Final Four games and Monday’s championship game.

While most people are starting to focus on the 2022 NBA Playoff picture starting to come into focus in recent days, a certain subset of NBA draft fanatics are already looking past that to the next big news item on the Boston Celtics’ teambuilding agenda — the 2022 NBA draft.

And though the Celtics will not be anywhere near the letter or even the first round of the draft without making some fairly substantial trades to pick up draft assets for this year’s big event, they do have a second-round draft pick that could be used to pick up a steal in what is seen as a fairly deep if not especially talented draft class.

There won’t be any “plug and play” prospects in the latter third of the round where Boston is likely to be selecting, but Boston could find talent able to move the ball and shoot at potential future positions of need with the right eye to find it.

And to that end, we brought on For The Win and Hoops Hype NBA draft expert Bryan Kalbrosky to talk about what value can be squeezed out of such a late pick, as well as if they happen to still be in the NCAA Tournament for Celtics fans to get a look at in the coming week.

Check out this pod with hosts Cameron Tabatabaie and Justin Quinn as we talk all things big dance, draft and even get into the Great Batman Debate among other recent Boston news nuggets.

We finally made it. March Madness. Shockingly, this is the first NCAA tournament with fans in the stands since 2019  – and I’m so ready for it. I bet you all are too.

As I wrote several weeks ago in my Top 5 Picks to Win the NCAA Tournament article, the field is stacked – and no one has separated themselves as the true top team in the nation. It’s very deep.

You can bet on the tournament all Spring long using BetOnline.ag. Here are their top ten to win each region along with my pick for each:

West Region:

Gonzaga                             -160

Duke                                  +450

Texas Tech                       +525

Arkansas                        +1600

Connecticut                   +1600

Alabama                         +2500

Memphis                        +2500

Michigan State              +5000

Boise State                    +5000

Vermont/Davidson      +6600

The west region has the number one team in the country and the number one overall seed in the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Gonzaga is 26-3 on the season – having only lost to Duke, Alabama, and St. Mary’s on their attempt at returning to the National Championship.

Ironically, two of the three teams that beat Gonzaga in the regular season in Duke and Alabama are also in this region. Duke is playing in what is Coach K’s last season, and Alabama is coming off of two straight tournament appearances under head coach Nate Oats.

Gonzaga is the best team in the country. I’d be shocked if they don’t make it to the Final Four.

The pick: Gonzaga -160

South Region:

Arizona                            +160

Tennessee                      +425

Villanova                         +425

Houston                         +450

Illinois                            +900

Michigan                      +2200

Loyola-Chicago           +2800

Ohio State                    +3300

Seton Hall                    +4000

TCU                               +5000

This region has four teams that have each made a Final Four within in the last three tournaments. Villanova, Houston, Michigan, and Loyola-Chicago have all found their way to the host city since 2018. These teams have championship pedigree.

Arizona is the number two team in the country, led by head coach Tommy Lloyd and sophomore guard Bennedict Mathurin. They’ve won their last six, with their most recent win being a dominant come from behind victory over UCLA  in the PAC-12 Championship. The Wildcats are hot, and it’ll be hard to stop them.

The pick: Arizona +160

East Region:

Kentucky                         +225

Baylor                              +260

Purdue                            +375

UCLA                               +550

Texas                             +1800

St. Mary’s                     +2000

Virginia Tech               +2200

North Carolina            +2500

San Francisco              +3300

Murray State               +4000

This is my third chalky pick in a row, but I’m taking Kentucky to win the East Region. Sure – March will always have some crazy upsets and long-shots who make a Sweet-16 run, but it’s the blue bloods who make the Final Four.

Baylor went on a spectacular run last season and ended up getting a National Championship out of it – but having the National Player of the Year in Oscar Tshiebwe and an all-time head coach in John Calipari will be what separates Kentucky in the East.

The pick: Kentucky +225

Midwest Region:

Kansas                       +210

Auburn                        +250

Iowa                            +350

LSU                            +1000

Wisconsin                +1200

USC                            +2200

San Diego State      +2200

Miami                        +2500

Providence              +2800

Creighton                +3300

This is arguably the most wide-open region in the tournament. It truly goes ten deep, all the way down to Providence and Creighton.

With that being said, I’d be hard-pressed to find a better team than Auburn to come out of this region. Sure – they lost early in the SEC Tournament to a smoking hot Texas A&M Aggies team, but this is anyone’s region, and having a dominant player like Jabari Smith to rely on down the stretch doesn’t hurt either.

Sorry Kansas, Iowa, and Wisconsin – It’s Auburn who gets back to the Final Four.

The pick: Auburn +250

The NCAA Tournament became the largest sports casualty of the coronavirus within mere days of college basketball’s brain trust mulling a tourney without fans. West Virginia’s Bob Huggins was privy to those and ongoing conversations about the future of college basketball.

[arve url=”//html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/14004824/height/90/theme/custom/thumbnail/no/direction/backward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/7b3d2b/” /]

Like when the conferences slowly shut down their tournaments one week ago, Huggins believes the NCAA will follow the NBA in a return to normalcy. With the pro league already delaying the NBA Draft until August, that likely strikes a major hole in recruiting. Huggins, along with his former assistants, South Carolina’s Frank Martin and UAB’s Andy Kennedy, joined Jeff Goodman’s Good N’ Plenty Podcast with pessimism about the normally busy mid-summer recruiting calendar.

“I don’t see how any decisions can be made early enough to do anything in July, because there’s so much unknown,” Martin said. “We all grew up at the Peach Jam. Do you really think we’re going to be able to sit shoulder-to-shoulder like we did on the sidelines?”

The amount of planning at various levels for coaches, the teams involved and organizers at the South Carolina event. Huggins believes it still could happen, but doesn’t imagine college coaches openly recruiting while the NBA remains shut down.

West Virginia’s coach has drawn attention for his grand idea to return to college basketball with the NCAA Tournament. It may not be the full 64-team field, he said, but a two-weekend tournament with 32 teams could declare a national champion for 2020.

“I think it’d be a great way to get fans excited about college basketball,” Huggins said. “It’s great way for the NCAA to recoup some of their money. It’s going be on CBS, I mean there’s nothing to watch. I’ve been watching Naked and Afraid on Sunday nights.”

The NCAA did not extend eligibility relief to winter sport athletes like it did to spring seasons that got cut nearly entirely. West Virginia is set to lose two seniors and a transfer as well. ESPN slotted them as a four seed in the final Bracketology.

Duke and Kentucky specifically, Goodman said, will feature casts entirely different from last year.

“That’s Cal’s fault,” Huggins quipped. “He should’ve planned for it. That’s what they would tell us … Cal wouldn’t want to do it not for that reason but because it was my idea and wasn’t his.”
